Zambia

A Wealth of Wildlife and Wonders

Why Go on a Zambia Safari?

Marvel at the Might of Victoria Falls

Victoria Falls has earned its local name, Mosi-oa-Tunya, or ‘The Smoke that Thunders’. Nothing prepares you for your first sight of the Zambezi River in full flood thundering over the drop – 500-million litres of water per minute crashing into a deep gorge, throwing a cloud of mist and rainbow-lit spray high into the air.

Superb, Year-round Game Viewing

Zambia is one the world’s greatest wildlife sanctuaries and is the birthplace of the walking safari.

From tracking beloved and sometimes rare wildlife on foot in the verdant Luangwa Valley to canoeing the Lower Zambezi skirting crocodiles and yawning hippos, Zambia’s staggering diversity makes it an unforgettable wildlife destination.

One-of-a-Kind Experiences

From a microlight flight above the spray of Victoria Falls or bungee jumping off the Victoria Falls bridge to close encounters with the endangered African wild dog - Africa’s painted wolves, Zambia offers bucket-list experiences found nowhere else on earth.

Exclusive Lodges & Camps

Luxury accommodation and Zambia are synonymous. Expect grand experiences from luxury suites with four-poster beds, private plunge pools and spacious decks for romance seekers to safari villas with a personal chef and guide for travelling families.

Quick & Easy Air Transfers

Zambia has dedicated airports that service most of its national parks that stretch for miles between them. See Zambia from a unique perspective as you fly over its expanse and spend more time on safari without the hassle of long transfers.

Convenient Add-ons

Frequent flights and accessibility make it easy to combine your Zambia safari with other spectacular destinations like South Africa, Botswana and Zimbabwe. Pair a safari with a beach vacation by visiting Cape Town’s  beaches.

Top Safari Destinations in Zambia

Here are some of our best packages, all completely customisable to your requirements and travel wishes:

Victoria Falls

Clocking in at twice the height of Niagara Falls, the Victoria Falls is one of Africa’s greatest and most-visited attractions. The area is known as Africa’s Adventure Capital because there is so much to see and do.

Hit the water in a canoe, raft or cruising boat; meet habituated elephants; leap off the historic bridge; and swim in the famous Devil’s Pool. There’s also plenty of shopping and history, as well as lazy days in the sun after a safari.

Highlights

  • Helicopter flips and microlight flights over the Falls
  • Canoe safaris on the Zambezi River
  • Seasonal swimming in Devil’s Pool, right on the edge of the Falls
  • Bridge swinging, bungee jumping and zip-lining

South Luangwa

South Luangwa National Park is famous for its walking safaris; in fact, this sizable national park is the birthplace of one of the most exciting ways to see big game in the wild.

Leaving the 4X4 game-drive vehicle at camp, you set out on foot with a guide and an armed national park ranger to walk among elephants, antelope, zebra and even the occasional predator, always maintaining a safe distance from these magnificent creatures.

Highlights

  • Walking safaris
  • Luxurious tented camps and lodges
  • Mountain biking opportunities in the wilds
  • Incredibly scenic landscapes

Kafue National Park

The largest of Zambia’s conservation areas, Kafue National Park is an off-the-beaten track safari experience: excellent game viewing but with barely another vehicle in sight.

It’s a beautifully wild landscape with just a handful of luxury tented camps. Plus, Kafue is also a mecca for birdwatching with over 400 species recorded.

Highlights

  • Conveniently close to Livingstone and Victoria Falls
  • A hidden gem with low visitor numbers
  • Phenomenal game drives including night drives to spot leopards
  • Spectacular scenery with famed African sunsets

Consider Adding...

Mana Poola National Park

Mana Pools National Park

Mana Pools is the golden child of the Zambezi Valley, rugged and beautiful, it is home to a wonderful mix of grassy floodplains, woodlands and riverine forest. Forming the park’s northern border is the broad Zambezi River, its backdrop the mountains of the Rift Valley Escarpment across the waters in neighbouring Zambia

A pride rests along a riverbank

Liuwa Plain National Park

Liuwa Plain National Park is not a regular feature on a Zambia safari, but its vast open grasslands are remote and impossibly stunning, and home to incredible numbers of animals including hyena, the endangered wild dog and buffalo. This park has one of the oldest conservation histories in Africa.

Straw-colored Fruit Bats - Eidolon helvum - hang upside down from trees

Kasanka National Park

Every year from about October to December, the skies around Kasanka National Park come alive with around 10 million straw-coloured fruit bats. That's right, East Africa's Great Wildebeest Migration is not the largest mammal migration in the world!

When To Go To Zambia

Dry Season: May–Oct

The dry season runs from May to October and it’s the best time to go to Zambia for game viewing – the wildlife is easier to spot and there’s hardly any rain, along with pleasantly mild daytime temperatures.

September and October are known for being the extremely hot months where the African sun beats down on the plains in all its glory. Although it is considered a popular season for safari travel to Zambia, most of the parks won’t be crowded except for Victoria Falls.

Rainy Season: December-April

The rainy season is commonly referred to as the ‘green season’ or the ‘emerald season’ because the bush is beautifully thick and verdant. It’s a wildlife photographer’s dream!

With so much rain around, there is a myriad of bird, plant and animal life which seems even more vibrant than usual. Not to mention the amount of baby animals born at the end of the dry season, which makes for beautiful pictures and lots of predator action.

How Much is a Zambia Safari?

Rates generally depend on timing (i.e., key travel seasons like holidays) and level of luxury (the type of amenities and exclusivity).

From $450 – $1,650 per person per night

What Costs Are Included?

Most accommodations are all-inclusive; all your meals, snacks, beverages, alcohol (with some exceptions) are part of your room rate. In addition, your game drives, and other excursions like walking safaris and cultural village visits will all be included.

To operate in such remote areas at such a high level of hospitality, it takes some serious logistics and often means guest-to-staff ratios of more than 5 to 1. Not to mention many accommodations offer services like laundry, so you can pack light and travel easy.

The only things you’ll have to pay for are special activities (like hot-air balloon rides and spa treatments) and, in some cases, imported spirits. Beyond that, just gratuities for the incredible staff who will make your stay at each lodge so memorable.
