Thanks to a mild climate and an abundance of wildlife in heavyweight destinations like the Okavango Delta, Moremi Game Reserve and Chobe National Park, Botswana delivers superb safari experiences any time of the year.
From gliding through the Okavango Delta’s tranquil waterways on a traditional mokoro (think of it as the Venice of safari) to socialising with a family of Kalahari meerkats, Botswana offers the kind of experiences found nowhere else in Africa.
Some camps have only three or four suites, making them very private.
Romance is provided by 4-poster beds, outdoor bathtubs and private plunge pools. For a special experience, spend a night in a star-bed under the African sky.
Despite some camps being situated in remote locations, they still take ‘glamping’ to a new level with amenities like spa facilities.
You may even find swimming pool pavilions and in-room, wood burning stoves in the middle of the Kalahari.
Botswana has dedicated airports that service the Okavango Delta and Chobe regions.
Many private reserves have airstrips, which makes flying in via light aircraft easy. The best Botswana safaris are fly-in itineraries, which eliminate the need for long road transfers.
Regular flights and accessibility to other blockbuster destinations like South Africa, Namibia and Zimbabwe make it easy to augment your Botswana safari.
Add a visit to the award-winning Cape Town, Victoria Falls or a Kruger safari.
From lunar-like desert landscapes and open grasslands to riverine forests and papyrus-lined canals, Botswana delivers the very best in land and water safari experiences.
Combine luxury and adventure in some of the world’s most remote locations, while the magical sights and sounds of Africa leave you with memories you’ll cherish forever.

The Okavango Delta is considered one of Nature’s masterpieces and offers an insight into one of Africa’s truly great wildernesses. It is a maze of beautiful lagoons, winding channels and overgrown islands that are teeming with wildlife, making it a superior safari destination.
The Okavango Delta is a jewel in the heart of the Kalahari Desert. African wildlife has adapted for this life both in and out of the water, and the likes of lion, cheetah and African wild dog share the floodplains with large herds of elephant and buffalo.
Highlights
If there is one memory that you’ll take away from a Chobe safari, it’s of the elephants. About 120 000 of these mighty beasts live in and around Chobe National Park. They are often seen crowding the banks of the Chobe River during Botswana’s dry season.
Chobe is undoubtedly one of the best places in Africa to witness the most dramatic predator action – the Savuti region is where lions regularly clash with hyenas and powerful prides famously take down the biggest game like buffalo and giraffe.
Highlights
A Kalahari safari rewards those that venture into its remote climate with incredible game viewing and ultra-luxurious accommodations, often in fully furnished safari tents.
The Kalahari has a well-deserved reputation for its predators including black-maned Kalahari lion, cheetah, and the reclusive leopard. Sleep-out under the stars, take guided nature walks with San Bushmen and immerse yourself into a land of spectacular beauty.
Highlights

If it’s an Okavango Delta-type experience you are looking for but with an air of exclusivity, then travel to the private reserves of Linyanti, Selinda and Kwando.
Bordering the Caprivi Strip, these wild wetland reserves have exceptional game viewing opportunities, particularly in June to October, the dubbed dry season.

The Tuli Block is tucked away in the eastern Botswana and is a hidden gem. It offers a very different safari experience to the rest of the country.
It is set around the Limpopo River which features dramatic rocky landscapes, huge baobab trees and elephants and is protected by private reserves.

The Tsodilo Hills nickname is the ‘Louvre of the Desert’ and it is covered in over 4,500 cave paintings created thousands of years ago.
The hills have been declared a UNESCO site because of their fascinating history and for the Sans people that have lived here for over 30,000 years.
Botswana’s dry season is between April and November each year, and this is when you can expect to see clear and near uninterrupted blue skies. June and August are the coolest months when desert temperatures in the Kalahari are known to drop below freezing.
The height of the dry season, from September, is when the Okavango Delta has its highest water levels and the most remarkable wildlife sightings. With less land available, the elephants, lions and buffalo will be found in more concentrated pockets than when the water levels are lower.
Botswana’s green season from December to March is cooler in temperatures and has heavy showers, with January and February being the wettest months and the land is an emerald paradise. These short and sharp showers are often followed by sunshine and don’t last all day.
These months are a time of abundance in Botswana that coincides with the birthing season of many herbivores, and with lots of young around, the possibility of predator-prey interactions is high.
Designed to deliver a top-heavy big game experience, this 7-day safari takes in three of Botswana’s premier game viewing destinations: the legendary Okavango Delta plus both the Savute and Chobe River regions of the Chobe National Park.
Start off with the tranquility of the Okavango Delta’s waterways where you’ll enjoy both land and water-based adventures in a wildlife-packed environment before flying into the Chobe National Park for some of the best game viewing in Southern Africa.
Savute is home to all the major predators and is particularly famous for the savage interactions between lions and hyenas, and there’s more drama on the Chobe River where you’ll be staying at Chobe Game Lodge, the only permanent riverside lodge located in the Chobe National Park. The dry season game viewing (June to October) is phenomenal and you’ll experience some of the best elephant sightings in Africa.

Spanning Botswana’s two great biomes — desert and delta — this adventurous safari delivers an amazing diversity of wildlife, birds and natural landscapes. The desert adventure begins in Botswana’s Kalahari, on the border of the Makgadigadi Pans National Park. Your accommodation, Meno a Kwena, is set on the Boteti River and enjoying a rare (for Botswana) elevated view.
And then a flight to the fringes of the world’s largest freshwater delta – the Okavango Delta – and an especially wildlife-rich pocket: the Khwai River. Two camps in the Khwai are combined to give you unique perspectives of the area. The first, set in a drier area, offers more land-based activities and the most incredible ongoing spectacle of elephants in and around camp. The second offers a quintessential Delta experience with land and water-based activities.
You stay at comfortable tented accommodations complete with en suite bathrooms and sit down to three-course dinners. Safari activities focus on morning and afternoon game drives, and as your accommodation sits in privately run concessions, there’s the chance to enjoy night drives and guided walks too.

Rates generally depend on timing (i.e. key travel seasons like holidays) and level of luxury (the type of amenities and exclusivity).
From $500 – $2400 per person sharing
Most accommodations are all-inclusive; all your meals, snacks, beverages, alcohol (with some exceptions) are part of your room rate. In addition, your game drives, and other excursions will all be included.
To operate in such remote areas at such a high level of hospitality, it takes some serious logistics and often means guest-to-staff ratios of more than 5 to 1. Not to mention many accommodations offer services like laundry, so you can pack light and travel easy.
The only things you’ll have to pay for are special activities (like hot-air balloon rides and spa treatments) and, in some cases, imported spirits. Beyond that, just gratuities for the incredible staff who will make your stay at each lodge so memorable.

"From unique eye-level Big 5 game viewing on a water safari to the contrasting silence and migration activity of the Makgadikgadi Pans, it’s one of the last remaining wildernesses in the world. The warmth of the people and their love for conservation makes Botswana a standout African adventure destination.”
